After installing DOS4 on several computers, we occasionally had problems where you would do a DIR on a directory and get a listing of a different directory. After playing with different ways of using EMM386.SYS, HIMEM.SYS (which we don't use anymore), SHARE, FASTOPEN, etc. I didn't see the problem - although it may have happened to others. Lately, I've noticed that I'll ask for a directory of a floppy diskette and I'll get a directory of the current directory on hard disk! Doing a directory of a different directory on the hard disk seems to work OK. Changing the default drive to the floppy and doing a DIR works OK. CHKDSK and some other pgms that do directories work OK. Sometimes (but not oftem) it happens even if there is no disk in the drive. The problem is more prevalent (maybe only on) B: (which is a 5-1/4" as opposed to A: which is 3-1/2") and with 360K disks (vs. 1.2Megs). I discovered that the problem was related to APPEND...APPEND/X specifically. If a hard disk directory is APPENDed - *any* hard disk directory - I get the problem. With APPEND loaded but no APPENDED directory, no problem. Note that it is the current hard disk directory and not the APPENDed directory which is listed. The problem occurs if you boot a vanilla system (no CONFIG.SYS, no AUTOEXEC.BAT, only hidden files & COMMAND.COM on the disk) and load APPEND/X so it's not related to SHARE, FASTOPEN, BUFFERS= or any of the other things I might have suspected. Anybody else have this problem or able to shed some light? Many thanks.
