[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 32-bit Memory Upgrade for NEC

mikew@athena.mit.edu (Michael B Williams) (02/09/90)

I've been trying to upgrade the memory on my NEC Powermate SX with the
special 4MB memory expansion board that NEC offers. After calling around,
I find that most of the clone board makers don't have it, and the lowest
local dealer wants $1010. I was about to get it, but a friend insisted
that's too much to pay. Sure enough, PC Week shows prices hovering around
$100 per MB!!! That's over $600 for the 0K board!!!

Does anyone know of a place to get NEC memory boards cheap? (Or even for
a reasonable price, like Marshall L. Buhl found the 4MB Compaq memory for
$600?) Failing that, would a standard $99 AT memory board suffice?

You should consider yourself fortunate. Toshiba wants ~$1200 for an extra
2Mb in a T5100. The best price I've seen is ~$1000. Does anyone know of
a better price?

If the 80386SX is a 32-bit processor with a 16 bit data bus, is
motherboard memory accessed 16 bits at a time, the same as I/O. If
this is so, how can an NEC 386SX utilize a 32-bit memory board? Or
is 32-memory access possible with a 386SX?
