************ SPOILER ********* SPOILER ********** SPOILER **********

My opinion of the Verdict (for those not wishing to read further):

Both my wife and I liked the movie. It was a belivable story,
and Paul Newman's performance was quite good. I'm inclined
to agree that it's not award winner, but the movie does contain
a believable look at both the legal and medical professions.

Now to answer the question:

The woman was working for the defense attorneys gathering
info on Newman & Co.'s case.

She apparently had praticed law before her marriage and
divorce from her husband (also a lawyer), and wanted to resume.
The head of the defending firm agreed to take her into his firm
if she would do the job for him.
She was having a conscience attack that evening, after the
expert witness, Dr. Gabor (or whatever his name was) was
given the opportunity to vacation on some remote Carribbean
island for the duration of the trial. She undoubtably provided
the info on who the witness was, destroying any case that Newman had
against the hospital and the doctors.
As for the guy who paid her, I don't know if there was any relationship
there, that is, other than working for the same firm.

The head honcho for the defense, when she was in his
office one evening (visibly upset), put her roll in perspective.
That evening, the head defense attorney (can't recall his name) was
telling her that that was the way good cases were built - using whatever
unscroupulous means were available.
