just had a 30mb Seagate die after about 5 years..... what to do? 2 questions: 1. it's been a couple months since backup, so there is some-but-not- horrible data loss. Does anybody know what it costs to have somebody retrieve data from dead disks? I know firms do this... 2. Is it smart or dumb to get the thing "rebuilt" for $75-80 vs getting a new $350 drive? all help will be appreciated. e-mail is easier to get, but I'll read thru ALL of comp.sys.ibm.pc just in case it's not convenient for you to e-mail. thanks, -- Russell Shackelford School of Information and Computer Science Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, 30332 russ@prism.gatech.edu (404) 834-4759

I had an 84Mb disk "die" horribly in a power surge (it was my personal machine, so getting it replaced was a "last resort"). I used Disk Technician Advanced, by Prime Solutions, and after a few weeks or repeatedly running it overnight (the manual has a bunch of suggestions on how to recover from such things), it found and locked out all of the bad spots caused by the surge (I assume that the head contacted the media in a couple of spots). Anyway, it worked for me, and it did recover several files that were previously inaccessible (the whole DISK was inaccessible when I started). Good Luck! Clay Jackson
