a I saw "Tootsie" last night, and I would like to recommend it. I had gone expecting a light comedy, and I was pleasantly surprised. In fact I found it a very topical film, addressing many serious issues. (In case you are unaware, in this film our hero, an out-of-work actor, gets a female role in a soap opera, and as a consequence, has to lead a double life. He finds it very grueling and illuminating experience. He and various people around him grow and learn valuable lessons.) And yes, the film is very funny. My one beef would be that the writers did not anticipate how funny it would be, and there are many lines which you can not hear as the audience hasn't finished laughing yet.

As a woman, he befriends one of the actresses he works with (Jessica Lange), and becomes sort of a "mother" to her, or at least she sees it that way. But, he falls in love with her. As he is playing a woman, he ignores one of his best female friends (Teri Garr), and also becomes alienated from his roommate (Bill Murray). This is NOT a drama, however, it is a comedy. There are several hilarious situations (like when a man proposes to him), and I laughed all the way through the movie. Dabney Coleman ("9 to 5", "Modern Problems") also stars. I heartily recommend this movie to everyone, it's just great! --Dave Curry pur-ee!davy

I am happy to report that I really enjoyed this movie, and recommend it to everyone, especially those who think "he couldn't pull it off". The only weak part was the ending, I think; otherwise the movie was very thought provoking and funny, too. I wonder if Michael Dorsey is a reflection of Dustin Hoffman's real character? By the way, I recently saw and enjoyed "My Favorite Year", but it seemed very uneven. The first few minutes seemed to drag, and some of the humor is irritating. However, it is a rewarding movie because Peter O'Toole is great, and all the corny things you could expect to happen, really do happen. Also, it is guaranteed to make you laugh, and perhaps cry.

Tootsie is indeed very good. Dustin Hoffman turns in an inspired performance. Another thing worth mentioning is the equally good, if not better performance of Jessica Lange. 'Time' describes her character's quality as 'smoky vulnerability'. I can't find better words myself. Vahe Sarkissian
