We've got a dead PS/2 model 30-021. The 3.5" hard disk decided not to spin at all on power-up, so in trying to replace the thing, I've discovered: It's a DASD interfaced drive (is this REALLY true?) The controller is part of the motherbaord These things are expensive to replace These things are slowwwwww 85-120ms seek times To get the box back on line, we put in a DTC XT HD controller and an EXTERNAL segate 4051 and an EXTERNAL power supply (from a XT). This setup works fine (the box has never been faster), but the external electronics is a real problem (RFI and audible noise and doesn't match the furniture and other really important stuff). My questions: What's the story on the originial drive? Is it really DASD or the typical IBM-disguised simple format? Can we install an internal 3.5" drive and grab power leads from somewhere off the PS/2 motherboard? Why did we buy a PS/2 in the first place? Any help is greatly appreciated. -- "It's such a fine line between clever..." < Doug Lucy DC Pro > "...and stupid." < uucp: uunet!tropez!dlucy > "Yeah, stupid." < bbs: 703-370-8672 >
