[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Advice wanted - Hercule or VGA paper white

yjkim@milton.acs.washington.edu (Yong Kim) (02/19/90)

Recently I happned to buy a use AT box which comes with
EGA/Hercule card built in the mother board (Western Digital board).
I am not going to spend $$$ on color screen, but would like to
buy a paper-white VGA (especially from Magnavoux or Samsung) monitor.
My question is

WILL VGA PAPER WHITE MONITOR WORK WITH EGA CARD? IS VGA a superset
of EGA?

Can anybody in the net help me decide? Of course, I am not limited to
any specific brand names. Your experience/advice will be really
appreciated and thanks to whoever will reply (in advance!).

I bought an AT system with a Hercules graphics monitor, but quickly
found that very little software (other than strict text) ran on it.

My solution was to buy a very cheap Rennaisance VGA card ($140 brand
new), and a Goldstar VGA paper white ($110 brand new).

All my game playing friends were disappointed that I didn't get a color
monitor, but I have been completely satisfied with mono.

Try looking in Computer shopper for some really good deals. The prices
noted above were what I paid in November 89, so they probably haven't
dropped much since then.
