It would seem that Tracy Kidder's Soul of a New Machine would make a boring movie, but don't underestimate Hollywood. We'll witness the human drama as Tom West's marriage crumbles amid the pressures of work! We'll spend at least half an hour on the scene at the liberal arts college where the engineer goes slack-jawed over the topless woman with the "miracle of biological engineering" body! We'll thrill as the team struggles to build its computer in time to compute the expected crash site of a Russian atomic satellite, while resisting KGB efforts to steal the computer's plans! Flashing lights! Computer graphics outtakes from TRON! And every once in a while they'll slip in a scene of a group of lonely engineers gazing into logic analyzers late at night to remind us of what the story's really about.
