[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PS/2 Model 30 HW configuration

dougm@palomar.SanDiego.NCR.COM (Doug Marshall) (02/20/90)

One of my acquaintances at a local high school asked my assistance to find
out if he could get a larger hard disk installed in his mod 30 without
getting it from IBM. He has a 20 MB hard disk installed and would like to
install a larger disk. Therefore:

1. Can any 1/2 height drive be installed without changing the controller? If
so, any recommended brand? Is the stock drive MFM (most likely) or RLL? He
is not too familiar with the hardware and I know nothing about them.

He seems to think that the drive that comes with the system is a stock IBM
and nothing else will fit into it. The reason he thinks that is that one of
the 3 1/2 drives "broke" in the machine used for the school yearbook. (The
publisher gives the machine to the school for that purpose) and one of the
$80 generic drives wouldn't fit. They had to get a $300 unit from IBM.

I would appreciate any and all information that you can give me about the
PS/2 Model 30. Please e-mail if you can or post if you must.

Cheers!
