[comp.sys.ibm.pc] The Sony CPD1302 Experience. The Final Episode!

indra@amdcad.AMD.COM (Indra Singhal) (02/21/90)

Hi Folks,

Like I promised, here I am concluding the experience.

If you may recall, after the Autoswitch upgrade, my 1302 would switch
size in text mode after 10 minutes of exercise (read: warmup). It also
lost screen real-estate in text mode if I set up 800x600 to cover full
screen. With the 1024x768 mode, the height would only cover the center
5" of the screen. In addition, following a h/w hang, a reboot would
occasionally get the 1302 to loose it's mind and the text would jump all
over the screen ! That was not all, The picture was kind of like an
hour-glass too. All of this was at the threshhold of pain... [you
must think I have very high tolerance levels... maybe I do...]

Anyway... when I took the monitor back, the Tech. suggested that I bring
my entire system so he could set it up for me.

Finally, I did. He spent about 20 minutes messing around with tiny
potentiometers in the craziest places and got it right for 800x600 and
regular text modes. The crazy loss of mind seemed to have gone. I
compromized on the hourglass... a barrel in Text for a perfect 800x600
mode.

The Tech was really zapped when I showed him Ventura Publisher in
1024x768. His surprise was sufficient for me to not push it. He opened his
books and showed me the absence of this high resolution. He did not
recommend I try to mess with it. I agreed.

More Later, folks. As for now, I am thrilled with my upgrade to VGA for a
total cost of about $250.00, including the card and upgrade to the
Monitor. Only in Silicon Valley!! Oh what a place!
