I'm trying to decide on which monitor to buy to use with my ATI VGAWonder video card. I've somewhat decided on a Seiko monitor. I'm unclear, though, which of the monitors Seiko makes would allow me the most use of my card. For example, which would allow me to use 1024 x 768 graphics, yet still allow me to use the lower graphics. (I believe this is multifrequency??) And where does interlacing vs. noninterlacing come in? I've somewhat decided on a Seiko monitor. I'm unclear, though, |which of the monitors Seiko makes would allow me the most use of my card. The 1430, which was discontinued, is a dual frequency. The 1440 is now available (I'm using it right now) and is multi-sync. ($550) At the top end, it can only do 1024x768 interlaced. Note that to do a true 1024x768 non-interlaced requires 65 Mhz bandwidth, most of the products which claim to do it like NEC 3D (45 Mhz) and Sony 1304 (50 Mhz) don't really meet the full bandwidth although they may have the 48Khz horizontal frequency. A NEC 4D is ok but that's a little expensive. I've heard rumors of a Seiko 1450 but know nothing about it. -- Phil Ngai, phil@amd.com {uunet, decwrl, ucbvax}!amdcad!phil When guns are outlawed, only governments will have guns.

True, but rather irrelevant. The ATI VGAwonder card won't do
1024x780 non-interlaced, regardless of the monitor. It's 1024x780
mode is interlaced. I've got one so this is first-hand data.

The Nec 3D does not claim 1024x780 non-interlaced. Admitedly, the
ads tend to be a bit vague on the subject (what's new?), but the
manual that comes with the 3D is quite explicit about the 1024x780
mode being interlaced, albeit with an 87Hz frame rate instead of 60Hz,
so its a bit better than you might expect.

An 87Hz frame rate makes a BIG difference. I'm quite sensitive to flicker, but don't notice any flicker at all in 1024x768 even with a completely white screen on a Gateway2000 "CrystalScan 1024". However, the 56Hz frame rate in 800x600 mode is very flickery on bright displays. -- {backbone}!cs.cmu.edu!ralf ARPA: RALF@CS.CMU.EDU FIDO: Ralf Brown 1:129/46 BITnet: RALF%CS.CMU.EDU@CMUCCVMA AT&Tnet: (412)268-3053 (school) FAX: ask DISCLAIMER? | _How_to_Prove_It_ by Dana Angluin 24. by appeal to intuition: What's that?| Cloud-shaped drawings frequently help here.
