I recently bought a hand scanner that has 32 grey scale levels, except that that figure is deceiving. It detects 32 grey scale levels, but dithers that so that the received image is black and white on the screen. I take it that this is actually a common occurrence, because it's the best way to reproduce output on a on/off output device. However, for screen images, I think 32 shades of grey would be preferable. Does anyone know of any good software that does this (that is scans in a true greyscale, and/or converts an existing dither to greyscale?) -- Craig Werner (future MD/PhD, 4.5 years down, 2.5 to go) werner@aecom.YU.EDU -- Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1935-14E Eastchester Rd., Bronx NY 10461, 212-931-2517) "The proper delivery of medical care is to do as much Nothing as possible"
