[comp.sys.ibm.pc] YMODEM problems

dbarnes@garth.UUCP (Dave Barnes) (02/21/90)

I think this may have not gone through so I'm reposting.
Apologies if I duplicated a posting.

I had a problem uploading in Ymodem (plain vanilla Ymodem,
not Ymodem-G or anything) to a particular bulleting board.
I kept getting all bad blocks, regardless of what file I
tried to upload. Xmodem worked fine, however, so I used that.

I usually use Ymodem Batch but it wasn't an option on this
BBS. I'm using Procomm Plus (never had a problem) and a
new 2400 baud modem (no MNP).

The modem manufacturer said if files could be transferred in
any protocol, then everything with the modem was fine; the
modem just maintains a connection; it therefore must be a
software problem. The sysop of the BBS in question
said that others use Ymodem and they have no problems.

Help! Who's right? If it's the modem I can exchange it
within 30 days. If it's the BBS, I'll just go with Xmodem.

Your emailed or posted responses are appreciated.

A SysOp friend of mine told me that ProComm+'s Ymodem is really Xmodem-1K. I
didn't have a chance to check it out. Try requesting Xmodem-1K on the BBS side
and Ymodem on the PC+ side.

Cheers!

As a followup to my earlier posting about using X,Y,ZMODEM from
within MS KERMIT 3.0, although MS KERMIT does cause odd behavior
from the other protocols (actually, ZMODEM seems to work OK), the
main problem seems to be in YMODEM.

I have been trying to use a program called RCOMM (from SIMTEL) to
enable me to download files from a VAX in the background, while
doing other stuff on my PC. On the VAX, I have a version of X/YMODEM
obtained from SIMTEL, in file RBSB.C.

When using YMODEM to send files in batch mode, while this usually
works, sometimes it screws up. Either a file gets truncated, or else
the received file is only vaguely similar to the original. Bits get
transposed, repeated etc. All the while, RCOMM is beeping at me
about a data communication error. Since the problems are repeatable
(the same thing occurs every time when a file transfer doesn't
work), there must be some problem with the YMODEM transfer.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
