[net.movies] Whither the Dark Crystal?

rew (12/13/82)

I have been seeing previews of Henson's newest (next?) movie,
the Dark Crystal for almost a year now. Of course, it's 'coming
soon to a theater near you'. Well, it hasn't come yet -- anyone
know the scoop on this one?

Dark Crystal is being released this week. From the Today show
this morning, during an interview with Henson.

The reviews I have read generally indicate that it is well produced and
sophisticated, but depressing. And the characters are supposedly
uninteresting.

We saw The Dark Crystal the other day, only because it was on the same
double-bill (for $2.75) as The Toy, which we wanted to see.

The Dark Crystal was AWFUL! It came across like an attempt to be a
Great Fantasy (say, like Lord of the Rings). But when I've never
seen or heard of (or read about) this particular world, with its
Mystics, Skeksis and whatnot, a five-minute blurb told in a deep
voice at the beginning of the movie isn't going to turn me on.
Towards the end of the movie, when you've had a couple of hours
exposure to the world, it gets a little better, but not much.
Much of the speech was unintelligible, too. I don't care if Skeksis
speak in ugly gutteral tones - I prefer to understand what they're
saying.

About the only redeeming feature was Fizzgig, a dog-like pet which
is something like a constantly rolling ball of fur, and very cute.

P.S. The Toy was pretty good. Standard Richard Pryor.
