I'm planning on buying a new computer, say a 386/20 with 40-80 MB HD, 1-4 MD RAM, both 3-1/2 & 5-1/4 floppies, etc. I was going to buy it from an inexpensive mail order place. Does anyone have a good list of caveats/questions to ask before I buy? I already know about whether you can choose to have the high memory to act as expanded rather than shadow RAM, and whether it includes an LIM EMS driver. What else should I worry about? Also, how much does a 32K or 64K cache really speed up most applications, and will it work effectively for windowing software like Windows/386? (That is, it seems to me that a multitasking environment could negate much of the benefit of a cache. Does this happen?) Please e-mail replies and I will post a summary to the net. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim Seidman, Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA 91711.
