[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PC Paintbrush IV ? Is it any good

hst@mh_co2.mh.nl (Klaas Hemstra) (02/20/90)

I recently saw that PC Paintbrush IV was sold.

My question: Is it any good ?

I have used PC-Paintbrush 2.0 for about two years now, it worked perfectly
on my hercules card.
Now I have bought a VGA setup, and would like to use the Super VGA modes
with a paint program (640x480x256, 800x600x256, 800x600x16, 1024x768x16).

More to the point questions about PC-Paintbrush IV:
- Does it use EMS memory if present
- Can it use Super VGA modes (if yes, what board(s))
- Can it use the old fonts
- Has there been any product reviews of it (in Byte ?)

Also: Is there any other paint program that does ALL of these (please don't
start a 'I like this one better).

Thanks to anybody who would like to answer,

What type of bucks are we talking about here? I'm interested, even
though all I have is PC-Paintbrush 1.0 (I believe - the one they sold with the
MS Mouse). How much disk space does it use up? Can it import graphics
pictures from other types of formats - say .gif or what First Publisher puts
out?

I have used PC Paintbrush IV, and was disappointed in how it ran. It
does support a vast selection of video cards, BUT, and it is a BIG BUT,
it will not run any of them in the 256 color mode above the MCGA 320x200
mode. PC-P IV does not know of the existence of EMS or XMS memory! You
are limited to the 640K DOS limit.

Now, PC Paintbrush IV Plus will do all of what you asked. It
recognizes EMS/XMS memory, will turn the excess hard drive space into
virtual memory if needed, and supports most hand-held scanners from
within the program. The cost is a bit steeper, but if you are doing any
work at all in the Super VGA modes, it is well worth the coins.
