[comp.sys.ibm.pc] .TAR compress/decompressor wanted for PC

tt3x@vax5.cit.cornell.edu (03/04/90)

Does anyone out there have a TAR program for the PC that allows
you to compress and decompress UNIX .TAR files? If so, could you please
let me know how I can get ahold of it? Also, is there source code for
this for the PC?

Thanks!

A program named PAX was posted to c.b.i.p. recently (I think I saw
a note from the moderator since then about a newer one coming soon).
this program supposedly provides the functionality of both tar and cpio
for PC's. I grabbed it but haven't tried it yet, so I can't
report on it myself.

I just finished trying PAX out on a tarfile fromanother Unix system...
It works just fine at extracting. Now, if I could work up a way for tar
to prompt for replacement filenames... those Unix names just don't fit
sometimes, and truncating to 8 characters isn't always the best
solution.
