[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Hitachi Hard drives

wrp@biochsn.acc.virginia.edu (William R. Pearson) (04/13/88)

We have recently replaced some Hitachi 71 Mbyte disk drives
(Model DK511-8) with larger drives. (These are on a Silicon Graphics
workstation). As a result, a 71 Mbyte drive is available for use
on my IBM-PC/AT, which spends most of its time running Xenix. The
drives have the configuration: 32 sectors/track, 823 cyl, 10 heads.
They use a ST506/412 interface.

I use the DUB14 ROM upgrade in my machine to recognize lots
of different kinds of hard drives, but It appears that most (all)
drives for the standard IBM-PC/AT have 17 sectors/track.

Can I use these drives with my standard IBM-PC/AT (real IBM)
hard disk controller? If not, is there a controller that I can use
for these drives (I would rather spend $200 for a controller than
$900 for a new drive). I note that the current version of Xenix
can be configured for non-standard disks, but does the controller
understand 32 sectors/track (and what if I need to do a hard format)?
