[comp.sys.ibm.pc] file transfer between PC's

ppd491@leah.Albany.Edu (Peter P. Donohue) (03/05/90)

I am having trouble transerring files between a laptop and my PC.
Both have hard drives and 2400 baud modems, but different floppy disk
sizes. I would like to transfer files through their modems. I tried
using PC-Remote (gotten through FTP) on both machines and procomm and
smartcomm, but to no avail. All of the programs expect to make a phone
call, where I am trying to connect the machines directly (without going
through the telephone company).
I have a copy of PC-Hooker, which is supposed to let you transfer
files through serial ports, but I don't have the cable or the free port.
I would oike to find a way to use the modems. Any ideas?

You are making this much too hard. Connect the 2 modems together with
a standard telephone cord. Fire up a comm program at each end (doesn't
make much difference which one as long as they have comptible transfer
protocals). Send a command to the modem at one end to originate (ATD)
and send a command to the modem at the other end to answer (ATA).
This should result in the same kind of connection you would have made
had you actually dialed the call in the normal manner. Both ends should
be set for the same speed and transmission parameters, of course.
The commands for your modems may be different. I just looked at the
reference card for my Hayes 2400 and it does not list an answer command
but I have used this lash-up with other brands and it works fine.
I suspect it will work with my Hayes too but can't try it without
interrupting this message. Hope this helps.
