Quick question... I know you cannot have two disk controllers in a PC, but can you have one for the floppies and one for the hard disk? I see controllers which are for hard disk only which doesn't seem logical if my first sentence is strictly true. -- _____________________________________________________________________ Internet: fordke@ingr.com \ "and the Trees are all kept equal UUCP: ...!uunet!ingr!fordke \ by hatchet, axe, and saw." -Rush

???? What is the problem ?? You can have a floppy disk controller and a hard disk controller. You are probably thinking that you can not have 2 hard disk controllers. This is true, but only due to the nature of the ROM bios and/or O/S. For example, Unix for 386 machines, do not use the ROM bios and can support 2 hard disk controllers. *Mel

But I am curious to get the answer. And I have a question related to this. My friend have a two floppy disk drivers, both for 5.25" disk. I helped to add a harddisk with a controller card. It works. Now, if he wants to replace one of his 5.25" disk driver into a 3.5" one, does he need another disk driver controller card for 3.5 driver? (Someone suggested here that simply replacing a 5.25" drive with a 3.5" one will only give 360k capacity for the 3.5" drive.) So, can we have 2 floppy disk controller cards? Thank you in advance for giving the answers. --che

(Someone suggested here that I successfully replaced my 5.25" B: drive with a 3.5" drive in a 1985 vintage xt-compatible, with no controller change. I use MSDOS v3.21, and my CONFIG.SYS file includes the line: drivparm=/d:1 /f:2 /h:2 I couldn't do this to the A: drive, because the BIOS and controller can't handle the 3.5" drive on their own (so they can't ever load the o.s. and CONFIG.SYS). But it works with no problem for my B: drive. Umm... I'm talking about a 720K 3.5" drive. I believe this will _not_ work for a 1.44M 3.5" drive.

PCs can support two controllers. Most controllers have a jumper which selects either the primary or secondary disk controller address. The problem is that the bios does not support having a second controller. Anna Books sells C source for IBM PC and AT compatible bios programs which can be modified to support second floppy/hard disk controllers. Anna Books advertises in many PC magazines in the classified sections.

I just installed a 1.4meg 3.5" drive on my AT. My system has an NCL Hard disk/Floppy disk controller with two hard disks and two floppies attached. I now have a 1.2 meg 5.25 and a 1.4meg 3.5 working flawlessly... bite my tongue... It was plug & play since my bios supports both. marty

It's common practice to have one 5.25" and one 3.5" floppy drive connected to a single controller. You need DOS 3.3 to do this. Your 3.5" drive will read/write 720/1440 k diskettes with no problem. -- Phone: (home) 219-482-9631 E-mail: feustel@well.sf.ca.us {ucbvax, apple, hplabs, pacbell}!well!feustel USMAIL: Dave Feustel, 1930 Curdes Ave, Fort Wayne, IN 46805
