[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Computer Shopper

conslt13@zeus.unomaha.edu (Troy D. Taylor) (03/01/90)

I have a question for all the PC owners out there who have bought their
computers from or dealt with Computer Shopper. The question is this.

**Which if any companies in Computer Shopper are not reputable?

I would really like your opinion or views...Before I send for $3,000 worth of
stuff to the various company with ads in the Computer Shopper.

Even if a certian company made you wait for 2 month for a monitor or somthing
I would also like to hear about it.

                                       later,
                                         Troy

From the January 1990 Computer shopper EDITORIAL:

COMPUTER SHOPPER'S POSITION ON HONESTY: For a decade the growth of
_Computer_Shopper_ has mirrored the growth of the industry as whole and
the mail order channel specifically. We beleive our growth is partially due
to the position on honesty that has been part of _Computer_Shopper_ since the
first issue was published. _Computer_Shopper_ expects its advertisers to
treat their customers fairly and honestly. To that end _Computer_Shopper_
will not knowlingly publish an advertisement if it had information that an
advertiser is repeatedly unfair in its dealings with the buying public.
To monitor its policy, _Computer_Shopper's_ Customer Service Department
follows and assists in resolving any problems between _Computer_SHopper_
readers and its advertisers. The vast majority of those differences are
worked out to the satisfaction of both the buyer and the seller. However,
if we are alerted to repeated legitimate complaints about a particular
advertiser and those complaints go unresolved, then _Computer_Shopper_ will
refuse future advertising from that company until those complaints are
resolved.

Copied without permission (any typos are all mine). What more could you
ask for?

I am not connected with _Computer_Shopper_ except as a satisfied reader
(and mail order purchaser! tho it takes a LONG time to look through 700+
pages looking for the best prices!)

As a Proxy for reputability and trustworthiness, I have a few criteria:
     *****

1) If they have enough money to advertise on the GLOSSY PAGES. :-)
2) If you also see that their ads in PC-Week or PC-Magazine.
3) If they don't have half-naked women leaning over the monitor in the ad, or
background pictures of fighter planes, or astronaut helmets with the name
   Ollie North written on it!

These may be necessary conditions, I don't know if they are sufficient!
