[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Multisync Monitors

gsgi_cif@uhura.cc.rochester.edu (Gregory Gibson) (03/09/90)

I have posted to other news groups and only got a few responses. I
know more poeple must have theses monitors out there and I received
a few "send me what you find out" messages so obviously people want
to know which Multisync Monitor (13" or 14") they should buy for the
price.

The two I know of are the Mitsubishi Diamond Scan and the Panasync.
The Nec IIA apparently has a problem.

If you own a 13" or 14" multisync monitor please mail me with a
desciption of it and include its cost. I will forward the info to
anybody who wants it.

Thanks,

The NEC 2A has no problems other than the fact that it is NOT a multisync
monitor. NEC is misleadingly using Mulitsync as a model name much as
IBM used PC as a model name. The cheapest NEC color monitor that
really is a mulitsync monitor is the 3D which is about $100 more
than the 2A ($600 vs. $500.)

Not true. The ones I have seen (several) have had poor convergence
and a generally poor image. Everyone I know who has gotten one
has sent it back. I sent one back. Not a good endorsement.

I bought five NEC IIa's over a month ago, to replace IBM 8512
displays. (If anyone is considering buying an IBM 8512 display, ask
me first. I've got over 50 of them installed and I would be happy to
give you the benefits of my experience with them.) One was DOA (dead
on arrival) with no signs of damage to the box. The other four worked
perfectly, as did the replacement for the DOA when it arrived.

I worked for a major PC monitor manufacturer (not in any way related
to NEC, in fact they nearly put that company out of business with the
original MultiSync) before coming to Rutgers. Although, in the past,
I had received a few NEC units with poor color, brightness or focus
problems, no such defects were apparent on the IIa's. None of the
monitors show any discernable misconvergence, ringing, blooming,
malfocus nor geometric distortion.

I find that, for the price, they are sharp, easily read displays. Up
until now, I had always preferred the Princeton Graphic Systems (PGS)
displays. However, I find that larger screens (the low-cost PGS VGA
monitor is only 12" versus the NEC's 14") are easier to work on. I am
so pleased with the NEC's that I have ordered 10 more units (to
replace 10 more IBM 8512 monitors).
