I got called to the scene of a dead hard disk the other day, a Miniscribe model 6053 40MB full-height hard disk run off a Western Digital WD1002S-WX2 controller. The controller tests out fine, but after a low-level format, even the Disk Manager software (and Norton) can't write partition table info anymore. Well, we got two decent years of service. Now I need a replacment. The 6053 had a 28ms rating, which I didn't know you could do in an Xt (Compaq Deskpro). I'd like to replace it with something similar, but the ads seem to imply that 28ms HD's are for AT machines and up. I don't care about full versus half-height, I just want a 40 MB hard disk that will work that old controller. Will Seagate models ST251, ST251-1, ST4051, ST4053 work with this setup? Which would you choose? With repair estimated at $350, I think a new purchase is called for. Advice about getting a NEW MACHINE appreciated, but the government doesn't always work logically. :) :) Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
