I agree with the author that the actor-actress distinction in the OSCAR awards should be eliminated. The performance is the important thing and not the sex of the performer. Setting up the distinction of male/female performances forces you into a sex role category instead of a "performance" category. The problem is that if there are two excellent performances within one sex category and just mediocre performances in the other, then, according to the OSCAR judging guidelines, we are forced to choose one winner from each category instead of choosing the best two overall performances.
