A while back I posted a question about upgrading hard disks on PS/2 30-286 computers. Nobody responded. Does this mean that NOBODY out there knows ANYTHING about this??? I want to get a larger hard drive. I figure I have three options, but I'm not sure. (1) Replace current HD. IBM sells replacements for HUGE prices. No thanks. Besides, I would like to keep my current HD. (2) Put an internal in an external case and buy a controller card. This one I am not sure about. Can it be done? (3) Put in a Hard Card. The AT-class Hard Cards are a little expensive when compared to the internals, but not nearly as expensive as IBM's. If you know anything about this PLEASE respond. --- Darren Porter, CSU Sacramento porterd@cssexb.csus.edu <- Internet ucdavis!csusac!telco1!dporter <- UUCP

Decide how big of a drive you want. Step 3. Open a recent copy of PC-WEEK, Byte, Computer Shopper, etc. Step 4. (optional) Go to a nearby computer swap meet & pay $5.00 to get in. Step 5. Find the lowest price. Step 6. Buy it. Make sure that you get cables and the Manufacturer's installation instructions and a copy of DISK MANAGER software. Or have the dealer/vendor install it for you. Step 7. Low level format. Since you have an IBM, there is probably no "on board" BIOS to do this; use DISK MANAGER to do this. If using MS/PC-DOS 3.20 or less, just let DISK MANAGER do the format, partitioning, and high-level formatting. Step 8. Run FDISK to partition the disk. DOS 3.31 and up, one big partition should suffice, 3.30, you decide, DOS 3.20, DISK MANAGER has already done this for you. Step 9. High level format. DOS FORMAT will do. Step 10. Reach around and pat yourself on the back. Step 11. Have yourself a beer to celebrate. kaleb@mars.jpl.nasa.gov Jet Propeller Labs Kaleb Keithley spelling and grammar flames > /dev/null
