Forgive this question from the trailing edge of technology but.... Is it possible to use a modem with a PCjr? Will it work with a Hayes-compatible modem? Is it possible to get a cable that will work? Will a common telecom program such as Procomm run on it? Many thanks for answers to these burning questions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seth Chaiklin Institute for Learning Technologies (212) 678-3899 Box 8, Teachers College, Columbia University, NYC 10027 INTERNET: chaiklin@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu UUCP: seth@ny-yn ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, it is possible to connect a modem to the PCjr. In fact, IBM created a special internal modem for the PCjr. Unfortunately, it only runs at 300 baud. There is a company PC Enterprises P.O. Box 292 Belmar, NJ 07719 (800) 922-PCJR (201) 280-0025 This company sells Hays compatable modems and cables for connection to the PCjr. They also have communication software available. I have purchased a few of their products and have found them to be of good quality. The 1200/2400 baud modem lists for $249. in their recent catalog. I do not work for this company, or get any benefits. Just want to pass the info along to another PCjr user. My opionions are my own, -- "I'm soo confused" --

There exists the PCjr infernal modem, which is 300 baud and Hayes incompatible and goes in the modem slot inside the jr, but ignore it; itr's a piece of trash at this point. On the back of the PCjr there is a socket labelled S. That the external serial port. It's not standard DB25, obviously. You can get conversion cables from any of three PCjr specializing companies Paul Rau Consulting, PC Enterprises, and Computer Reset. (PC Enterprises' phone number is 1-800-IBM-PCJR) Once you got the cable, it just plugs right into the external modem. Run whatever software you want. Zmodem may have a problem if you are downloading to the floppy drive and don't have DMA. If you have DMA, using a RAMdrive, or a Hard Drive, no problem. -- Mike J | The Grey Sysop... | Phone...RING!...yep yep yep yep yep! |
