The only way I can reason Ghandi winning best picture over ET is that Ben Kingsly looked so much like ET that the people who voted got the two confused on their ballet and hence ET really should have won. Either this is the case or they were off smoking zucchini somewhere.

Did anyone else out there get a little ticked off at the butchering of some of the names by Kristy McNichol and Matt Dillon? Granted, some of the names were a little unusual, but there's no excuse for the presenters not being prepared with the correct pronunciations. I know I'd be a little miffed if I was an award nominee or winner and couldn't hear my name being said properly. Bob Schleicher

Regarding the "scandal" that "Ghandi" won over "ET": I respectfully disagree. "ET" was a huge commercial success; all that money ought to be reward enough for it. I found "ET" a generally unbelievable movie and devoid of any redeeming virtues. The category of "best picture" ought to recognize genuine artistic achievement, which I believe "Ghandi" to be. - Alan S. Watt

There were 3 movies that could have won best picture ET, Ghandi and Tootsie, they all deserved it

Obviously, the best picture judging was done by integrating the acting quality over the length of the movie. This clearly favors the longer movie (Ghandi). The correct way to measure quality is by using the acting-rate, which would give normalized answers. Scott Orshan Bell Labs Piscataway 201-981-3064 houxm!u1100a!sdo

Yes, I was also annoyed at the (obviously intentional) butchering of names by those two. Actually, what were they doing presenting awards anyway? Then again, I also get annoyed a people who can't spell "Gandhi". The misspelling which keeps appearing in this newsgroup can't help but remind me of words such as ghastly, ghost and ghoulish, which Gandhi decidedly was not. I'm ghetting tired, so I shall gho now, Dave Sherman Toronto

To me the real scandal of the whole Oscar process this year was the lack of nominations for the film "Diner." One measly "Best Original Screenplay" (okay, okay, a nice enough award) nomination -- that it didn't even win! Maybe I should be happy that I'm so far out of touch with the Academy's tastes in films. ... uw-beaver!eli
