After my earlier article complaining about the level of discussion here, I figure I'd better contribute something else worthwhile. A couple of weeks ago I saw Diner. I recommend it, as it is quite funny (really absurd) and at the same time makes a decent statement about ignorance, sexism, and immaturity. Plotwise, this is your basic male-adolescence-comraderie film, but since I am not an expert on them, I wonder how other readers might compare Diner with such movies. Jan Edler ..!cmcl2!edler

At last, someone (Jan Elder), has discussed a non-escapist, non-fantasy movie in this newsgroup. Diner is not at all your typical "John and the boys hang out together" type movie. Ignore all comparisons to movies like Porky's or Animal House. Diner is a "serious" movie in the sense that, unlike American Grafitti, attempts to accurately depict the time (1959, I believe), and the place (Baltimore). (An "it" is missing from the last sentence.) For a movie tip. Those of you that don't mind subtitle should run (DON'T walk) to see Diva. A very very slick movie.

In response to your statement: "At last, someone (Jan Elder), has discussed a non-escapist, non-fantasy movie..." That's because this is a great, great summer for escapist, fantasy, and just generally FUN movies, but it's not been such a hot year for "serious" movies. Lawerence p.s. O.K., I'll run to see Diva.

Let's get serious folks... All the nominated movies and eventual questionable winners were a bunch of wothless collections of cellulite (oops, I mean celluloid). It's obvious the movie of the year was Diner, and that's that. Nothing too pretentious, or obnoxious, no one wearing diapers or any queens or fake plots, just a fun story about some wild-donkey folks who knew how to have fun. The Academy has as much brains picking winners (and noses) as the President has picking his cabinet. I almost stopped going to movies when they picked that rag Chariots of Boredom for so many awards. Let's elect Bill Murray to select the winners as he used to. Best Movie: The only one I've seen, Best Supporting actor and actresses, WHO CARES! Now get out of here you knuckleheads.
