[comp.sys.ibm.pc] MKS Toolkit, Expanded Memory

gw18@prism.gatech.EDU (Williams, Greg) (03/23/90)

I recently got a 20MHz 386 machine with 4 Meg of memory. I tried using
EMM386.SYS (I think that's what it is) from DOS 4.01 to take 2 Meg of the
extended memory and make it expanded memory. This worked with no problem
until I tried to use the memory. I ran Windows 286 v2.1. It ran fine,
but when I exited my machine locked up. I am currently using MKS Toolkit
with sh.exe -R as my shell. (Or, whatever the less memory usage option
on sh is.) I then tried just using sh without the memory saving option.
This time I got a prompt back, but every time I tried to run something I
got an error indicating I didn't have enough memory. (This was also after
running Windows.)

Does anyone know why this is occuring? If so, is there any way to fix it?
I know I could buy a memory management program, but I have ISC's UNIX that
I'm going to run as soon as I get a large enough disk for it. Therefore
buying an memory management program is mostly a waste of money. I just want
to use the extra memory until I get another disk and start running UNIX.

Would you explain me of "memory saving option with sh"?
Thank you.

I started using MKS took kit, too and I noticed a problem with .com files.
When I get out of Ethernet (Banyan) by executing logout.com command
my PC crashes.
