SUBST is a very handy PORTABILITY TRICK when you work with more
than one computer system, on a network for example. My two
computers are connected by a serial network. I use the SUBST
drive letters as a "system-independent" way to represent common
subdirectories.  E.g. I can move batch files between the machines
and be guaranteed that drive letter L:, for example, will access
the same files from either system.
