[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Reorganization of the PC-related groups

frisk@rhi.hi.is (Fridrik Skulason) (03/26/90)

The discussion in news.groups on the subject of reorganization of the
PC-related groups seems to have died out (Or maybe rather just drowned in
all the shouting).

In order to get the discussion started again I am posting this to c.s.i.p,
with followup directed to news.groups.

I propose the creation of the following groups:

comp.os.msdos Intended for technical questions about
the MS DOS operating system. This group would not
be restricted to PCs and "true" compatibles, but
would also cover the variants of MS DOS used on
incompatible machines like the old Wang PCs and the
Victor 1000. This group would cover subjects like
differences between various versions of DOS,
internal structure of DOS, FATs, device drivers,
MCBs, memory usage and bug reports (for MS DOS).

comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware This group would cover PC,XT,AT and PS/2
hardware: Monitors, video cards, disk drives,
power supplies, various expansion cards, EISA, mice,
light pens, Micro Channel, Network adapters, etc....

comp.sys.ibm.pc.wanted The place for the "I'm looking for X" topics.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc This group is intended for all the questions that
fit nowhere else, including questions about specific
                     applications.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.aquaria :-) :-) The importance of this group should
be obvious to every reader of news.groups....

The following groups would continue unchanged.

     comp.sys.ibm.pc.programmer
     comp.sys.ibm.pc.digest
     comp.binaries.ibm.pc
     comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d

The future of comp.sys.ibm.pc is the major question - is it really needed
if the rest of the groups ever gets created ?
