My parents have decided to retire the venerable 8088 clone they've been using and upgrade to an 80386sx machine. They are currently considering some of the many manufacturers found in the pages of Byte or PC Magazine. Companies such as Northgate, Dell, PC-Brand and Zeos. They don't really want to spend the money for an IBM or Compaq. My questions are: 0. Not to pry but: Brand Price What did it come with 1. How do these machines compare (in real actual use) to other better known brands such as AST and ALR? 2. How easy was it to set up the machine? 3. Were there any hardware problems with it at arrival or after it had been set up and used? 4. How prompt was delivery? 5. Is there provision for adding additional devices: extra hard disk (they're only getting 60 Meg to start) or tape backup. 6. How about extra memory? How much is it and where can you get it. 7. Have you been able to get OS/2 up on it (this is an important criteria)? 8. How about the video, is it on the motherboard or a seperate card? In both cases, is it possible to upgrade to 1024x1024 resolution later once prices come down? 9. Any other tidbits such as keyboard feel, fan noise, sensitivity to ambient temperature (this is really why the old machine is dying) would be appreciated. I'll post results to the net and let you know what/when they order and how it works out. NOTE: My parents don't really want a speed demon, just a reliable 386sx machine. thanks for all responses Terry
