A note to all you neeters, Central Point S/w is now accepting orders and updates for PC TOOLS Ver. 6.0 . I called yesterday and they claimed that they would be shipping Ver. 6.0 "in two weeks". The upgrade costs $ 40.00 (U.S.). Let's hope they do a better job of shipping on time than they did for their Ver. 5.0, that had numerous bugs and delays.... The last time I upgraded they told me that there were _100,000_ orders/upgrades already backlogged.. no mention of that much of a delay this time tho'... ============================================================================== Ross Bannerman | uunet!mitel!infotech Mitel Corp. +------------------------------------------------- KANATA, Ont. What are the differences between v5.5 and v6.0??

Let's hope PCTools 6.0 doesn't get as confused as 5.1 and 5.5 do when I reference a floppy drive as the second disk in PCSHELL. Sometimes it comes back with both first and second disk areas labelled as Disk 2. How fun! Also, 5.5 is significantly slower than 5.1 when reading the system/tree file. Unfortunately, it wouldn't let me use 5.1 PCSHELL with 5.5 DESKTOP. Ugh. ------------------------------------ Lloyd Haskins -- haskins@cs.uiuc.edu

Ugh. Even more unfortunate, 6.0 doesn't save tree files, and thus had to rebuild the tree whenever you run it. At least the tree is accurate, but the 4000 files in 450 directories (160 megabytes) in my DOS 4.0 partition take 12 seconds to read everytime I fire up PCSHELL (and I have an ESDI drive and disk caching as well!) I hope the final version (mine is Beta) will at least optionally save the tree files. The beta version only does for networked drives. Tom Almy toma@tekgvs.labs.tek.com Standard Disclaimers Apply

The biggest reason I abandoned PC Tools (after version 4) was if you like to view a file, then mark it for deletion, this works awkwardly in PC Tools v.5. If other files are already marked, it is awkward to view the next unmarked file--the view facility wants to start viewing with the first marked file. Consequently I have moved to WindowDos 3. Blindingly fast, can show up to 80 filenames on the sceen, saves trees (providing you don't change drives), is small (about 54K) and totally memory resident, has a very fast text that is effortless to get into. I no longer bother calling external text editors from comm programs. I can even pop up over memory hogs such as PC SAS, Word Perfect 5.1, Lotus. All the non- power users in our lab swear by it.
