[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Misc. Questions about SIMTEL20

santol@cbnewsc.ATT.COM (shawn.r.antol) (03/13/90)

I have successfully retrieved files from the SIMTEL archives via
the "trickle" server at "nodak.edu".

Questions:
  1) What is a trickle server
  2) Are there any other commands besides "/pdget ..."
  3) I lost the location of the "index" file. I think it
was named "SIMIBM.???". Can someone tell me its
name/directory so I can download it?
  4) Aside from dowloading the index periodically (every 4 mos)
is there a way to remain "up to date"?
  5) I assume that "PD1" means public disk drive #1. Are there
other disk drives that I might be interested in?
  6) Sometimes when I download and "uudecode" an "arc" file,
the file is corrupted and will not un-arc. Can I do
      anything to prevent this?

 Other miscellaneous questions:
  1) Am I communicating over the "internet", "bitnet", "usenet",
      or "arpanet".
  2) Are there gateways between the various networks?
  3) Are there any good books that describe these networks
and what they have to offer? And how to traverse between
      them?

   Any comments would be appreciated.

Yes, get "The Matrix" by John Quarterman. However, it runs about $50 at
bookstores where I've seen it. It will tell you more than you ever wanted
to know about every major computer network in the world, and how they are
connected.
