Portland is something of a special case: all the large, 1st-run movie theater chains are owned by one of two brothers Tom, and ??? Moyers. They hate each other and do everything they can short of murder to run each other out of business. I forget who runs the Luxury chain. The effect of this is they each try to out-bid each other for the cash offering to get an "exclusive" on a new release. Of course, that may not account for it. I paid $4.50 to see ROTJ yesterday afternoon in Connecticut, mistakenly believing the matinee price would be $2.50. I suppose there is also a fair amount of "what the traffic will bear" approach. I don't go to movies all that often, but matinee prices are usually $2.00 - $2.50, and evening prices are $3.00 - $4.00. - Alan S. Watt
