[comp.sys.ibm.pc] NEC V20 rebooting problems

peter@CUNIXF.CC.COLUMBIA.EDU (Peter Wu) (04/13/90)

Yesterday I replaced my 4.77 mhz 8088 chip in my old PC/XT compatible
with a 7+ mhz NEC V20. A friend of mine order it for me and the mail
order place had told him that they didn't sell 5 mhz NEC V20's anymore
and that this would work fine. I believe this, but am providing the
information in case it can help diagnose my PC's rebooting problem. I
also installed a new dma chip at the same time, for fastback had
failed my old chip at high speed DMA tests. It checks out fine now.

The rebooting problem never occured before the chip was installed. It
seems that when I reboot, the machine pauses for a short while and
then beeps and checks my A: drive and then my hard disk...then it
pauses again, this time for a longer period of time. Then it beeps
and checks the two drives again. It doesn't come out of this loop.

Did anyone else ever have this problem? Or have any ideas why it's
happening? Is it because of my old PCompatible? I assume so...
