[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 80387-16 in early Tandy 4000's

root@mjbtn.MFEE.TN.US (Mark J. Bailey) (04/13/90)

Can someone tell me whether or not 80387-16's will work when placed
in the inner pin sockets of the Wietek (sp?) math co-processor socket
on early Tandy 4000's. I have had a hard time getting straight answers
to this question. My dealer says that other similar sockets on other
motherboards do that, but my 4000 owner's guide refers only to the
80287 and Wietek 1167 (again, I do not have the manual in front of me
so please excuse mispelling or wrong chip number). However, it is my
understanding that though they originally intended to support the
Wietek chip, its cost was so great, Tandy gave up on that idea. They
do list an 80387-16 in the latest catalog, but my dealer seems to think
that early 4000's did not work with 80387's. I am very confused.

Does anybody know what the story is for placing an 80387 on a Tandy 4000?
Were early machines not supporting them, and if so, when and what did they
do to start supporting them, and can the earlier machines be made to
support them? They may have supported them all along. My dealer suggested
I get one and try, but I hate to risk $350 and have it fail and possibly
damage the chip.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has knowledge of this.
Please email replies.

Thank you,

Mark.
