I've got an AT with the standard 512K of memory and an AST board with and additional 1.5Meg...It's configured such that it allocated 128K to make base memory 640K and uses the rest as Extended memory...I run Timeline 3.0, Word for Windows, EXCEL, and a host of less demanding programs under Windows 286 2.11. Windows is configured such that SMARTDRV uses the 1.3Meg of Extended memory for disk cache. This set-up, though it may not be optimal, run fairly well...at least it did until I added a 3Com board and PC-NFS software...problem is that all of the drivers loaded via CONFIG.SYS eat up about 130K of RAM...+90K of that is the PC-NFS drivers! With the reduced memory Windows really slows down...I guess cause its doing more swapping...The question is...is there a way to load the drivers into Extended memory?...If not would buying an Expanded memory board with say a meg of memory make a big difference in Windows performance? Any responses are appreciated. james@einstein.eds.com
