[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Talking to COM1 in C.

How does one talk to COM1 using C?  I can send characters, using 
putc('\n', stdaux);  but fgets and getc only return what I type in, not
what is returned to the port.

I would appreciate any suggestions/examples to be sent E-mail.
