Gentlemen,
To start of I am discussing IBM PC-DOS 4.0. IBM considers 4.0 the proper
version number. 4.01 was issued to correct GLARING mistakes. NOW, here's
the good part. You can get from your favorite IBM representative or
remarketer the following diskette set(there are TWO):
CORRECTIVE SERVICE DISKETTE UR29015
This CSD will correct ALL known problems with IBM PC-DOS 4.0, including
using BUFFERS, FASTOPEN, and/or IBMCAHCE in extended/expanded memory. It
correct the memory handlers, etc. and provides a new internal command
SYSLEVEL which show DOS version/release date and CSD level/release date.
I too originally had problems with PC-DOS 4.0(labeled 4.01). Now, since
installing the CSD UR29015, everything works as advertised and I even save
real memory running certain system pgms in extended/expanded memory.

Therefore the Question is not always "Is DOS 4 broken", there are too Problems in the applications. Beside that, Programs not designed for upward compatibilty should not be used in newer version of DOS. I don't aspect the Norton Utilities 4.0 to run with DOS 4. I can't aspect to build an engine from a car out of the fifties to an new designed car from today.
