[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Coherent.

springal@hsi.UUCP (Rob Springall) (05/04/90)

I just ordered Coherent (the "virtual clone of UNIX") from the Mark
Williams Company out in Illinois. The person I spoke with was very helpful
with placing the order and answering the questions I had.

The introductory price (through 7/31/90) on the package is $99.95. There
is also a $6.00 shipping charge (via UPS Ground) so my total came out to
$105.95. The projected shipping date is the second or third week of this
month and they will not bill credit cards until orders are shipped.

Some of the details from their ad and the sales rep I spoke with:
	- Complete C compiler (I didn't confirm whether it just did 8086 code)
	- Source code compatible with other *ix's (NOT object code compatible)
	- Includes Yacc, Lex and Awk
	- Includes UUCP, Mail and Usenet (news) progs
	- Supports Trailblazers
	- Can access DOS disks
	- Comes on five (5) diskettes (either 5.25" or 3.5")
	- 10 meg suggested disk space
	- Can run in a minimum of 640K
	- 64K kernel size
	- 60-day money-back guarantee

Address & Phone Number:
	Mark Williams Company
	601 N. Skokie Highway
	Lake Bluff, IL 60044
	(800) MARK-WMS (627-5967)
	(708) 689-2300

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I'll be running it on a PS/2-55SX
and let you all know what happens.

Here's my two cents' worth of opinion. Can it run X11 ? Otherwise,
this UNIX amounts to nothing. 3 or 4 years ago, it would be okay;
like the MINIX OS, which is still pretty good for what its worth.
But these days, UNIX has gone WYSIWIG and X11 is the in-thing.

If this beast has no chance of ever getting X11 up and running, then,
I would say it has missed the mark. Well, can anyone tell me if this
thing can run X11 ?

General info: X11 Release 4 consist of about 60 MB of source code
(including all the libraries and trash) !
UNIX has grown really FAT these days ....... sigh.
