By public demand, here are the replies that I received to the question of why Word 5 could be slowing down. 1 - Disk fragmentation - Word swaps data to disk and may do auto saving too. These operations will slow the performance of Word on a fragmented hard disk. Solution - use a hard disk defragmenter program to tidy the disk. 2 - Memory fragmentation - Word appears to save the current document as a block of text along with changes that have been made to it. As time progresses, these changes clutter up memory. Solution - save regularly to compact the memory. 3 - Memory and CPU hogging TSR's and the like, including viruses. Solution - remove them. 4 - Word spending time doing other things, such as auto-save and auto- repagination. Solution - switch them off. Thanks to everyone who replied. I hope that these problems and possible solutions may be of benefit to others. cheers Christian Legg Christian Legg ********************************** University Computing Services, * 'Go ahead... * University of Adelaide, South Australia. * ...make my doggy day' * * * Phone : (08) 228 5549 * Otis (Dudley Moore) * ACSnet : legg@sirius.ucs.adelaide.edu.au * 'Milo and Otis' * FAX : (08) 223 6245 **********************************
