[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Testing a New 486

clong@topaz.rutgers.edu (Chris Long) (05/07/90)

We're getting a new 486 in a few weeks, and being relatively new to
the PC universe I have a few naive questions.

This 486 comes with a 30 day testing period. Does anyone have any
advice on what to do during this period? Which test programs should
I run? Where do I get them? If someone would be so kind as to
give me pointers as to where I may obtain some landmark programs
I'd be more than happy to post the results for and a review of this
particular brand and model.

The computer is from Gateway. Has anyone had any experiences (good or
bad) with this company?

What type of compatibility problems will a 486 have with existing PC
programs? Are 486 specific C compilers and assemblers currently
available? If so, how good are they?

I remember hearing that the 486 was having some problems with floating
point handling. Are any of the bad 486 chips still being sold, or
were they all recalled, i.e. is it something I should look out for?

The most important question is, of course, where do I get a volume
control?
