[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Good experience with mail order.

markg@cbnewsk.ATT.COM (mark.r.gibaldi) (05/04/90)

I had a refreshing experience this week. I'm always reading about vendors and
mail order companies who provide little or no customer support after the sale.
I had an encounter with a company that was surprisingly good. I want to
complement them on their excellent customer service.

I purchaced most of the components of the 386 system I built from a company
called Homesmart Computing. I saw thier ad in the back of PC-Week. Their
mother board stood up well to my questions regarding its design. I also
ordered a video board and a WD-1006 Controler from them. All with a one
year warranty. This was in October. Last week my controller died. I was
in the middle of writing a paper which I have to present next week so, I
felt I was a gonner. I called Homesmart. They told me to send it in and they
would check in out. I sent the board to them overnight on tuesday, they
received it wednesday, and I had a replacement at my door thursday morning at
9:00am. I've never had such good service from a mail order firm.

P.S. I have no affiliation with Homesmart other than being a satisfied
      customer.

Speaking of good vendors.. I'd like to put in a plug for PC Connection
of Marlowe, NH.
I bought a Mountain tape drive from these guys. There price was as
good as any I could find. It arrived the *next* day via air-freight at no
additional cost.
The Mountain drive wouldn't work in my system (interrupt/DMA prob-
lems.). I called PC Connect's tech support guys. They listened to my story
and told me they would ship another drive immediately to see if I had a
compatibility problem, or simply a bad drive or controller. They did *not*
make me return the first drive in order to get the replacement. I was
impressed. The 2nd drive arrived a couple days later and worked no better
than the first. I sent both drives back with a note and my credit card
refund was posted within 48 hours.
Folks, it doesn't get any better than this. I'm used to mediocre
treatment at the hands of mail-order houses. It was a refreshing change to
be treated so nicely by PC Connection.

I must agree. I am on the computer committee for my school, and order from
many mail order houses.

PC Connection is the absolutely best. Even when I messed up a math coprocessor
once that I needed to return (there was nothing wrong with the chip; the
accelerator board on which it was to be inserted was incompatible), they
took the chip back and refunded our account promptly.

The worst mail order house I dealt with was PC Network before they filed
for bankrupcy. I ordered a PC in May of 1986 and had it come it bits and
pieces through October 1986, and even then some components did not work.
Worse of all, they had deserialized the computer (it was an IBM AT) because
they were not an authorized IBM dealer.

PS: I am not in anyway connected to PC-Connection.

I'll second that recommendation. I've done a fair amount of business
with PC Connection and have ALWAYS found their prices to be near the
best and their service to be THE BEST.

If you live in New England, it is also worth a drive up (or down) there
sometime. It's a beautiful drive, and the building they are in is something
to be seen. They will open up any package of software you want to try and
let you play with it for as long as you want on the machines they have
there. They are also good on recommendations.

They've been like this for as long as I've known them. Several years ago,
before they had a showroom, I bought a printer from them. I wanted it NOW,
and although it must have been rather inconvenient for them, their answer
was "we really aren't set up for walk-in sales, but if you don't mind
that .... come on up."

No, it really doesn't get any better than this.
