[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Reliable LANs for very remote locations -- What will work?

mdr@reed.UUCP (Michael Rutenberg) (05/09/90)

I would like to network together a set of XT, AT and maybe eventually 386
class machines. The standard stuff of file sharing and electronic mail
are important to start, and possibly something which can deal with (small)
shared databases later on.

The difficult part of this is that it must be very reliable, easy to
troubleshoot and easy to reconfigure (as nobody on staff is there for
computer technical stuff and it is 5000 miles to the nearest ComputerLand).
It doesn't have to be fast -- it just has
to work well. Everything in this paragraph should apply equally to the
hardware and the supporting software of the LAN.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know what I would do
in a simple Mac environment -- you are my greatest resource in the PC
world!
