I've recently started working with some large files, and I'm now encountering a problem first-hand that I'd only read about before: my disk controller (Western Digital WD1006SVR2) is locking up. The symptom is always the same: the access light turns on solid, and the controller goes catatonic. The problem is worse with access to my faster drive (an Imprimis Swift), but accessing an old 65ms Miniscribe will eventually cause the problem as well. Reaching back into my archives, I see where some folks claim to have found a solution (a board jumper) while others claim that this just disables the cache, turning the board into a 1003-clone. (If I wanted a cheap (>1):1 controller I would have bought one. Should I junk this controller? I'm tired of reboots and partial files. -Ed Hall edhall@rand.org
