We have a few small AST Workstation machines, and the Conner Peripherals CP342 40 MB hard drive in one just failed. I called Conner (CTFM...Call The Friendly Manufacturer :) and was told that the appropriate replacement was a CP-3044, which is the same size but faster (1:1 interleave rather than 3:1) and smaller (1 inch high, not 1.5 inches high) in the same 3.5 inch form factor. Fine and dandy...even the price is OK (from $320-$350 around here), except that this drive model is "on allocation", meaning I may not see one for six weeks. Only so many are shipped up to the Northwest I guess; don't we get a special break with Gates and all up here :) :) ? Question: are there other, more available drives, that can be used to replace this one? It's a special kind of drive with an imbedded AT controller (not IDE, not SCSI, not externally controlled), and I've never seen anything quite like it. Is there a plug-compatible replacement? Thanks for any help!!
