[net.movies] Wargames -- things to watch for

spaf@gatech.UUCP (06/23/83)

Well, the various Friends of Entropy saw "wargames" tonight
as part of a celebration of Ameoba-head's birthday. We got quite
a few chuckles out of the whole movie, and believe it to be
a good example of what happens when you dabble in AI for too long.

There have been numerous comments made on the technical diffculties
ahso I don't think I'll need to comment further. There were a
few funny things in the movie, and we can't wait to get the
movie on videotape so we can stop it and checkout some of
the scenes. In particular, check the following:
A scene in the kitchen where the newscaster's voice
is heard in the background talking about a
	prophylactic recycling center.

A sign in the missile silo (right at the beginning)
when the crew changes. It's on the wall of the
corridor right outside the door, and states something
like "Any one urinating in the hall will be discharged."
Is that a common worry in launch control?

At the end, when WOPR is running through scenarios,
amongst the potential "powers" starting the War, we
see listed: Uganda, Northern Virginia, and Susan Surprise.

Look closely at the film of the dinosaurs Falkin
shows while talking to the kids. Pretty amusing stuff.
Especially the scenes from some of the old B movies.

We were pretty amused by the whole thing. With all it's faults
and technical problems, it still had its moments. No nudity,
decapitations, kung-fu, or zombies, and only one semi-wreck.
It doesn't do much for the reputation of us hackers, either --
the geek running whopper and the two bozos at the college
were bad enough, but having the hero take that babe up to
his room and just show her the computer...geez! (Have to
throw some sexist comment in there to provoke response from
a certain someone...you know who you are.)

See it, but don't sit near anyone who will take it seriously --
your laughter may upset them. And I'd feel cheated if
I had to pay more than about $3 to get in.

For the Friends of Entropy, or against them,
