[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Taming the Microsoft CD-ROM/Bookshelf combo

djo7613@hardy.u.washington.edu (Dick O'Connor) (06/04/90)

I'm sure that Microsoft has sent out quite a few of the Denon CD-ROM/
Bookshelf combinations in the past year, and I wonder if any of you have
managed to tame the beast. Guess I expect more than "talking dog"
technology at this stage of the game, but my initial results are mixed.

The package works well in standalone mode, and the demos were somewhat
helpful. But is it really necessary for the CD-ROM device driver to
require 14K, and Bookshelf (loaded as a TSR) to require 131K? Seems
like a bit of bloat to me. I'm using a fast 286; is there any way to
stuff some of this code above 1MB?

Bookshelf runs most effectively when you can pop it up over an existing
application. The docs say it supports WordPerfect 4.2, but I've got 5.1,
and attempting to load WP 5.1 after Bookshelf has been made resident
freezes up the machine during the initial WP screen display. I've stripped
out everything else I can think of, but either there isn't enough memory,
or the two can't co-exist. Has anyone been able to run Bookshelf over
WP 5.1 yet? I'd love to hear how it works for you.
