Several years ago, when setting up my first AT-compatible I purchased a ZOOM 2400 internal modem, rather than an external, to keep the cable clutter to a minimum. Though it's been a fine modem, there are two downsides to this approach: 1) It's usable only on another ISA platform, and minimally portable since one must open the chassis to get to it; and 2) One gets no visible feedback from connection activity (i.e., no lights).
